Rolyn Hills Bed and Breakfast
For good old fashioned western hospitality visit the Rolyn Hills Bed and Breakfast, just east of Red Deer, in central Alberta.
On this working guest ranch you can ride to check or move the steers, help doctor any that might need some medication, learn how to put up an electric fence, or just follow along to enjoy the action and beautiful scenery in the area. Choose to ride your own horse, or ride in the wagon pulled by the quiet ranch team, Fred & Barney (recommended for children under 10) Relax in their yard - read, listen to the birds and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Play horseshoes or bocce ball with family members or friends and the children are welcome to dig to their hearts' content in the sand pit.
When the sun goes down, roast some marshmallows and perhaps do some singing around the outdoor firepit.
Choose from different accommodations. The Ranch House has three bedrooms on the lower level with double and queen beds and two shared bathrooms. Relax in the common sitting area with a TV/VCR, Pool Table, darts, piano, organ and books. It also has 2 couches that can be made into pull outs for extra person(s) in your group.
The Purdie Family
The Purdie ancestors came from a luxurious lifestyle that included servants in Scotland to the hard life of the early pioneers. Life wasn’t easy but they still made time to help build a community that included a school and a church, visit with neighbors and get all the work done to take Sunday as a day of rest - time much needed for man and beast.
Rob & Lynda Purdie are the 5th generation to live and work on this land which is NW 36-37-26 W-4 in Red Deer County. Much of the work done here is the same as days of old. The cattle are worked using horses - moving the herd, branding, doctoring etc.
The Purdies welcome guests to ride along and experience the cowboy way of life, or just to enjoy the opportunity to breathe fresh country air and relax.
The ranch doesn’t employ outside help. Rather, when extra hands are needed their 3 sons and their families are pressed into action. It’s very special to Rob & Lynda to ride and work with their tight knit family unit that includes their sons and daughter-in-laws and grandchildren. It appears that this cowboy way of life will be carried forward at least for 2 more generations.
The Ranch
900 head of steers are custom grazed on the 2000 acres of ranch land. Grazing in one group, there is always the need to provide enough water for the herd - on hot days, that can take a few thousand gallons to keep them satisfied.
The herd is moved often to maximize the grazing so another regular chore is the fencing. Rotational grazing using electric fencing has proved to be beneficial for both the pasture and the herd. As the herd finishes in one area, they will be moved on to the next fenced area - right next door, across the road, or maybe a bit farther up toward the hills. Help is needed when there is a road to cross, or the herd is being moved farther. Guests who wish to help are most welcome.
Make memories to last a lifetime at Rolyn Hills B&B and Guest Ranch.
